This week I focused on integrating the iPad into schools. The tetrad I completed was as follows:
Enhances: customized, up-to-date learning Obsoletes: textbooks Retrieves: books, computers Reverses: unknown. What will replace the iPad?
I believe the iPad would save schools money in the long run, when we consider the cost of replacing textbooks every few years. Additionally, iPads would help to engage students, and keep them interested and focused in school.
Sadie's response to Amy:
I also did my tetrad for the iPad. I agree with you that they will cut cost in the long run. Schools are constantly trying to find ways to save money. iPads can kill two birds with one stone by saving money and exposing students to new technology.

Response to Amy Amy~ This year each teacher received an iPad. At first I was excited, but I really did not know how I was going to use it with my students. The opportunities are endless. We have had one iPad Party at our school where we all got together and gave each other ideas of great apps that we have used in our classroom. This is also an easy tool to use to do quick research. The game apps are great learning tools for all students and for all content areas. Now that we each have one in our classroom, I hope we will soon have the chance to get more. I agree that these help keep students interested and focused in school and they are quicker to use than a computer. Great job on your tetrad!! This is a great emerging technology that gets me wondering what could/will replace it.

Response to Amy, Amy I love my ipad! I have found so many beneficial applications to use not only to benefit my teaching but the students learning as well. I look forward to the day that each student has their own and we do not use textbooks, because it will all be on ipads!! Great post! JOY
Amy:
I also love my Ipad. I have found so many great uses for my students as well as for myself. Some the things my students love is doing is math drills on the app I downloaded and they love when I display a timer on the white marker board. I believe eventually that the students will be reading and working out their teextbooks from an ipad. Thanks for sharing your tretrad.Have a great week.

Joy Sheehan's Post:
I focused on incorporating the smart phone (cell phone) into schools.
Enhances: Cell phones has expanded immensely over the last several years. The cell phone can now not only communicate with calls and texting many have the option of voice texting making it hands free. The cell phone can also help with location and navigation, multimedia such as, video and cameras. People can now take photos and videos and send them directly to any recipient or even post them on the web. These phones can also access the web making shopping and research at your finger tips. You can upload music, videos and movies to many cell phones. Cell phones are a source for playing a variety of games to boost entertainment of the owner.
Obsoletes: In recent years the cell phone has replaced a large quantity of technologies. According to the article Obsolete Technologies and their Replacements (2011), the cell phone has replaced landlines, wrist watches, GPS, ipods, CD players, televisions and phone books. Because cell phones can easily access the web computers are used less for Internet purposes. Website retrieved from: http://www.philforhumanity.com/Obsolete_Technologies_and_their_Replacements.html
Retrieves: The cell phones has retrieved or rekindled the landline phone. With the landline phone you could many times only stay in one room or move around the house. You had to have an answering machine to retrieve messages. The cell phone can easily be taken anywhere and many smart phones have the capability of Skype and face time making communicating a face to face action without being together.
Reverses: I am not sure if the cell phone with ever be replaced in the future, but as we have seen it will only evolve. I remember my first cell phone, it was not one I could have placed in my pocket and the only thing it could do was make a call. I used it in emergencies and did by no means depend on it every day as I do today with my cell phone today.
I think school's will want to use the smart phone because it is very cost effective saving money because many students could use their own. It is also very easy to take along to research, photograph, or benefit any type of instruction.
Response to Joy~ Joy~ I have never really known what to think about students using their cell phones during school. However, as they become more emerged, they look to be a beneficial tool for student learning. I agree that cell phones are cost effective due to how many students now own a cell phone and it is at all ages. With the different apps available on smartphones, students are able to take their learning to such an extreme level. I think this is a great emerging technology in which I would love to learn more of how it is used in the classroom.
Gina
Response to Joy,
I have given a lot of thought to cell phone usage in schools. In my reading class, I let the students use the phones while they read silently. It provides the kids with some extra motivation to read while they listen to their music. There have also been times when I was in need of instant information while teaching, and I have pulled my own phone out of my pocket to find an answer. The benefits, I feel outweigh the disadvantages.

Response to Joy:
I am curious when they will eventually let the students to use their cell phones in the upper grades. I agree that they will be a great tool for students to use in school and they know how to use them. As teachers, we need to teach the proper use for school so they the right and wrongs. I believe there would some great uses for the classroom and their learning.

Lori Backen"s Post This week I focused integrating the ELMO Here is McLuhan's Tetrad ELMO Projector Tetrad Enhances: What does this technology do that is new? The ELMO saves time and money. ELMO Projector enhances Web 2.0 and allows teachers to use more effective methods of video projection in the classroom. For the ELMO, there is no special paper or pens are required. It connects to video projector, computers, and electronic white boards. It also is capable of audio and video recording. Lastly, it displays three-dimensional objects, has a freeze-button to pause images, captures students’ work and, displays moving pictures. Obsoletes: What does this technology replace? The technology replaces the overhead projector in the classroom. Retrieves/rekindles: What does this technology bring to mind (or retrieve) from the past? The ELMO technology brings to mind the obsolete projectors from the past that were limited in their ability to display video, and as well it did not have the ability to produce audio. Reverses: What might replace this technology in the future, or what might it cause to occur? Smart phones are the technology that might replace the ELMO. They have more capabilities in video and audio. They have the ability to incorporate all the applications into one small unit which is definitely an advantage in the classroom and in business. The only negative is cost and affordability.
Response to Lori~ Lori~ I do not know what I would do without my ELMO. This is such an essential tool for the better part of my day. I can not believe how we used to model to our students by standing in front of the room or walking around showing each group our sample on a regular sized piece of paper or book. As in our district, I believe that TV's are one form of technology that are going to replace ELMO's. I find ELMOs to be very beneficial in showing students examples and for students to be interactive with their learning that when these are gone, I just hope something better is going to replace it. Great example of emerging technology!

Gina Dewey's Post
This week I focused on using cloud computing which is a way to store and transfer documents on the cloud.
Cloud Computing
Enhances This technology enhances the way we store and transfer data from where ever we are located regardless of the computer or device we are on.
Obsoletes This technology obsoletes the floppy disks, CD’s, flash drives and external hard drives and other forms of storage systems.
Retrieves This type of technology is a portable method of data that retrieves and preserves documents and allows others to access this data without having to print off documents to share with others.
Reverses At this time, what will replace cloud computing is unknown. How much further technology can go into saving and transferring data is undecided at this time.
I think that by using this type of technology, students will always be able to access their documents as long as they have internet access. By using cloud computing, money is being saved on hardware used to save student material, less space is being used because teachers and students do not have to keep track of their devices and their material can be kept private so it is not able to be viewed by all.
Response to Gina, I love the idea of saving to the cloud! I recently just set up dropbox for my students to save on. We have been saving on pen drives and it has been nothing but a nightmare! Pen drives braking, not saving correctly, losing pen drives, ect. We have yet to save an assignment in the dropbox, but I look forward to less hassle and being able to get their document from any computer without having a pen drive!!
Great job! JOY
Response to Gina: I think this is a great idea. I have a lot of trouble with students losing drives, and not being able to find their documents, and it is incredibly frustrating. This would make my life easier in the way of my own organization as well. Matt
McLuhan's Tetrad: Voice Recognition Software
Enhance: Voice recognition software enhances general word processing as a whole. Word processing has come a long way but voice recognition software enhances how ideas are presented, and is a helpful tool for people who need to get ideas out in a timely manner, or who have trouble getting their ideas out by writing. Obsolete: Word Processing Retrieves:
I think voice recognition software retrieves and rekindles the idea of oral storytelling, and the sharing of ideas in a community format. The software reminds me of this because with voice recognition software I think people’s ideas and voice will come through more in their presentation. Reverses:
There could be some reverses as a result of voice recognition software, and that would be to the detriment of writing. I think voice recognition software could have an adverse effect on how well people write, and the organization of ideas that has to take place to be an effective writer.
Sadie's post:
For this week's application I focused on Apple's iPad. Below is my tetrad:
Enhances:
Can serve as a great student motivator.
There are educational apps that do not require students to have access to the internet to use.
They can cut down on the amount of paper that schools and students use on a yearly basis.
Eliminate items that students are required to carry and eliminate the necessity for heavy textbooks.
Great for students with learning disabilities.
Obsoletes:
Replaces textbooks and worksheets.
Retrieves/rekindles
This new technology allows students to get involved with the learning process in a whole new way.
Reverses:
It sets the stage for its own demise because there are many components that can be added to a newer faster model.
For my district the first generation iPad is considered an emerging technology but for another district the second generation may be the new technology in their district.
Anything new for the students will capture their attention. They look forward to trying new things and I believe using apps can help students grasp new concepts.
